Preface
The papers of Glenn. L. Clayton are divided into five record storage boxes under the following areas:
RSB 1-General files contain printed information which Dr. Clayton received as president of Ashland University from 1947 to 1980, these files are arranged chronologically.RSB 2-Biography, Correspondence files 1947-1976 and books.
RSB 3-Awards, certificates, diplomas, and mementos received by Dr. Clayton from 1930 to 1986.
RSB 4-Newsclippling files 1949-1984 contain articles dealing with Ashland University. These articles were saved by Dr. Clayton during his years as president of Ashland University.
RSB 5-Speeches written by Dr. Clayton 1948-1977, Ashland College administrative handbook 1938, Minutes of the Board of Trustees 1957 to 1979, Women's Auxiliary 1970 to 1976, Photographs of Glenn L. Clayton, audio-tapes, 16mm film.

File box containing research notes for the typed manuscript on the history of Ashland College written by Dr. Clayton in 1978.

Note: On May 12, 1989 the name of Ashland College was changed to Ashland University by the Board of Trustees. In this finding aid both Ashland College and Ashland University refer to the same institution.
The noteworthy items in this collection includes:
The general files serve to illustrate most of the events occurring between 1948 and 1978 on the campus of Ashland University. Note especially the file from 1970 contains information on the closing of the campus and canceling the appearance of actor Bob Hope. Additional topics covered here includes; fund raising activity, building construction and personal engagements which Dr. Clayton attended.
The newsclippings file contains information on campus events and activities of Dr. Clayton. In addition, are sports department articles which were collected by Dr. Clayton. These files are arranged by year.
A copy of Dr. Clayton's inauguration speech is found in the 1948 speech file.
The papers of Glenn L. Clayton were presented to Ashland University on March 15, 1994 by Dr. Glenn L. Clayton.
Biography
Dr. Glenn. L. Clayton was born on October 31, 1910 in New Lebanon, Ohio. He is married to Janet Stutz Clayton of Dayton, Ohio. Their two children are John of Ashland and Glenn II in Alexandria, Virginia. Dr. Clayton was graduated from the public school in New Lebanon, Ohio in 1926. He went on to earn a B.S. in Education (cum laude) from Miami University at Oxford, Ohio in 1932. He pursed graduate study at Ohio State University earning an M.A. in French and a Ph.D in History in 1948.
His experience in teaching began in 1933 when he served as a public school teacher. In 1938 he began working as a high school principle and from 1941 to 1945 he served as Superintendent of Schools in New Lebanon, Montgomery County, Ohio. In addition, he worked as a sales agent for New York Life Insurance Company from 1945-1948. His appointment as President of Ashland College occurred in 1948 and ended with his retirement on June 30, 1977.
After retiring as president he returned to Ashland University in 1981 as a general consultant and accepted an assignment as director of Endowment Clubs. Working with alumni and friends of the University, he promoted endowment giving and general university awareness through personal contact and, where sufficient interest was apparent, through the holding of roundtable luncheons and dinners in many areas.
