Biography
Austin
Moherman was born June 2, 1817 to Frederick Moherman and Hary (Horn) Moherman.
He was the seventh of Nine Children who lived on a farm in Austintown.
In the 1840's, Austin Moherman came to Ashland County to try his hand at
farming by purchasing 210 acres south of Ashland City. These original acres
were expanded to 1258 acres, and eventually became known as Moherman Corners.
Being a firm supporter of the German Baptist Church, on February 20, 1878 he plus several other members of the Ashland community met to formally establish Ashland College. Donating One-thousand dollars at this initial meeting would illustrate his belief in the importance of higher education. Over the course of several years he would donate an additional five-thousand dollars to support the work of Ashland College during its formative period.
He died January 6, 1894 at the age of 77.
