Oral History Collection

This collection of oral history recordings were produced during the 1976 national bicentennial celebration.  During this time students at Ashland College set about to record some of the well known individuals of the Ashland County area.  The following recordings are representative of this collection.
Dr. Raymond W. Bixler
Dr. Raymond W. Bixler was professor of history at Ashland from 1929 to 1972.  He served as Ashland College president from 1945 to 1948.  In 1921 he graduated from Mount Union College and did graduate work at Harvard University in 1922.  Earning a master degree in history in 1924 from Columbia University.  In 1929 he received a doctorate degree from Ohio State University.  Bixler Hall at Ashland was dedicated in his honor in 1972.  Dr. Bixler died April 6, 1990.

Mrs. H. Gill
Ashland resident Patricia Gill came to the United States from her native England.  This interview is part of the oral history interview series on English immigration.

Leslie E. Lindower
Dr. Lindower served as dean of Ashland College from 1952 to 1972.  In addition, he served as library director prior to 1972.  Dr. Lindower was a graduate of Ashland College (1926) and Ashland Seminary (1928).  He was awarded his Th.M. and Th.D. degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary.  He did additional graduate work at Ohio State University in teacher education.  Dr. Lindower died October 29, 1993 in Ashland, Ohio.

Dr. Rendell Rhodes
 
Dr. Rendell Rhodes served as chairman of the biology department at Ashland College.  He was a nationally-known expert on crayfish.  He was a former member of the earth science department at Wilmington College, and was a member of the zoology department at the Ohio State University.  He was also a former curator of the Cleveland Museum. 

He was a familiar lecturer throughout the state.  Among his collections were early American mailboxes, models of general stores, and printshop items.  He was a life member of the Ohio Historical Society.

Dr. Rhodes died September 26, 1976 .

Larry Vincent Sacco
Mr. Sacco immigrated to the United States in 1932 from southern Italy.  In 1953 he come to Ashland, Ohio.  For many years he operated the Vincent Sacco shoe repair store on E. Main Street in Ashland, Ohio.  This oral history was recorded as pat of the History of American Immigrants. Click here to begin.
Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Schneider
Recorded as part of the History of American Minorities series of oral histories interviews in 1975.  Part 1 deals with the political history of Germany and Mr. Schneider's involvement in World War II, which is very important in understanding the immigration of he and his family to the United States.  Part 2 deals more directly with the specific incidents and problems of their immigration and with what their life is like today.

Lulu Wood

Lulu Wood was professor and head librarian at Ashland College from 1929 to 1971.  She received her bachelor of arts degree from Ashland College in 1919 and her bachelor of science degree in library science from Western Reserve University in 1946.  She died January 30, 1979 in Ashland, Ohio.

Leslie O. Woodburn
 
Les Woodburn joined Ashland College in 1965 as director of academic counseling.  He was named registrar in 1973 and became director when the college began its evening programs on the main campus.

Prior to joing Ashland College, Les was superintendent of the Loudonville Perrysville School district, serving from 1958 to 1965.  He had also been a teacher and athletic director at Homerville, Perrysville and Loudonville from 1940 to 1965.

Les graduated in 1940 from Ashland College with a bachelor of science degree in education. 

Mr. Woodburn died December 31, 1981.
